She holds a PhD from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Her research interests include histories of philanthropy and assistance to mothers and young children, encounters between voluntary welfare associations (religious and secular) and state agencies, the gendered analysis of social action and the construction of compulsory social security in Franco/Belgian borderlands. She is author of the prize-winning monograph Protéger le jeune enfant. Enjeux sociaux, politiques et sexuels (Belgique, 1890-1940) (2014). Dr Marissal will collaborate with Prof Venken in designing research on the Franco/Belgian/German borderlands while pursuing her own research on social assistance to working mothers and young children in north-eastern France and Belgium, and on the migrations of women workers across the Franco-Belgian frontier.
